Encyclopedia of Stem Cells

In the connection with computer and IT technologies development increasingly more books are moving from the paper to the hard data. It concerns the scientific, technical and juridical literature in the first turn, where serious demands are made not only from content but also from information structuring. Thinking over, any database may become e-book. It should meet at least two requirements for it: firstly, information keeping in database has to be interesting for one or another reader’s category, secondly, its interface should be sufficiently attractive and convenient, and meet a number of special requirements, peculiar to given category of readers. The list of such requirements is own for every defined discipline, and e-books creators should take it into account. Leaning on the experience in the research of complex biochemical systems we have managed to collect detailed lists for some pharmacological and medical directions that allow starting creations of several e-books. Below you can get to know about results of work on one dedicated to stem cells.

In recently years the big interest to the themes of stem cells is observed. Extensive scientific results concerning problems of steam cells and possible approaches to its using in practical medicine have been collected. However great number of scientific publications and contradicting data make sometimes extremely difficult the task of quick search of information about differentiation pathways and signal transmission. There are great number of various databases of biochemical and biomedical directions, however full information specialized forм features of stem cells vital functions is contained nowhere. Our project is urged to make up for a deficiency in this field and create universal base of knowledge in order to help medical workers, scientific researchers and business corporations having been involved into research and using of stem cells, to receive urgent information about localization, signal pathways and differentiation pathways.

At present first testing stage of work have been finished, during of that methods and tools for information collection have been developed and cover for database possibilities demonstration have been created.

Stages of information collection.

In the frameworks of this approach demonstrational version of encyclopedia have been created which involves about 200 schemes and diagrams, provided by textual description, hyperlinks to databases, describing every elementary process of differentiation, signals transmission and molecules description, taking part in the processes. The database volume is about 2000 proteins and other molecules, about 800 descriptions of processes.

Text cover realizing navigation and search in the encyclopedia have been created, as well as organizing the encyclopedia content visualization and cross links between diagrams, textual content and relational database notations.

At present time the prototype of encyclopedia is passing the registration in the Ruspatent.

The access to the encyclopedia is realized as WEB supplement from any standard browser during address to the server in HTTP protocol. Server’s part was realized on Apache+PHP+MySQL server. Cover was written on PHP5 with libraries standard set.

Short description

  • Visually electronic encyclopedia consists of the main and some secondary panels, where search and navigation being realized, as well as output of additional information is possible.
  • In the left part of encyclopedia is navigation panel, which provide several alternative ways of qualifying information search in dependence on which type of data is interested for user.
  • Every found slide represents diagram and textual part, elucidative processes depicted on the diagram.
  • Diagram and text on the slide have hyperlinks, during address to them more detailed information about individual molecule and process is depicting in the additional window.
  • Encyclopedia gives the opportunity to develop the search by key word or phrase, at that search is being carried out both by diagrams and text and by notations in the database.
  • In the navigation menu there are links for review of all notations in database and for search by defined criteria. Thus, for example, it is possible to find all the molecules and processes connected with the defined disease.
